The Importance of Probiotics for your Dog

The Importance of Probiotics for Your Dog

Your dog's nutrition is important to you. These beloved animals are your camping and hiking companions, confidants, and friends. When they are ill, you worry. Probiotics are as important for pet health, and they are for your health.

Signs Your Dog May Need Probiotics Added to His Diet

According to WebMD, a need for probiotics is indicated by specific symptoms. Your dog may need additional probiotics if he manifests these symptoms:

  • Yeast infection
  • Bad breath
  • Flatulence
  • Itchy skin
  • Dull coat
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation

As with humans, antibiotics kill off healthy flora in the gut as well as killing the bad stuff. Probiotics, after a course of antibiotics, are very beneficial to establishing a healthy gut.

If you feed your pet a species-appropriate diet, consisting of minimally processed foods, he should receive most of the nutrients he needs. Like humans, your canine companion may require additional probiotic support for optimal digestive health.

Effective Probiotics for Your Dog

Dogs need different probiotics from those required by humans and even other animals and pets. Don't think you can just give Buddy a dose of your probiotic and things will be great.

Probiotics are host specific and can cause adverse reactions when given to the wrong species. Your cat's probiotic, your probiotic, and your dog's probiotics are all different and are not interchangeable.

What to look for in a Probiotic for Your Dog

  • live cultures
  • species-specific designation on the probiotics container
  • dry probiotic powders (these are more stable)

It is always best to consult with your pet's veterinarian before introducing something new into their diet. Other, more serious causes, for your pet's symptoms, may be the problem.

Your veterinarian will know the right probiotics for your furry friend. It is up to you to make sure your dog is receiving all the nutritional benefits you can provide, for his best health, and many exciting treks through the mountains.
